Wine Wednesdays in November, Join us on the 13th of November, 2024, Taste the Wines of Andries Jordaan - Winemaker in Tulbagh, South Africa

Join Nautical Wheelers for a Sip n Shop with Andries' wines on Wednesday Afternoon, 11-13-2024 at our stores in New Bern and Oriental, NC. These wines from Theuniskraal recently arrived in the United States this year and are only available in North Carolina. We will be tasting the Cape Riesling, Bouquet Blanc and Moscato Rose. Try something new, would be great with Thanksgiving meals

1. Cape Riesling - Hints of green apple and white pear combine in a lingering finish in this Riesling. This fresh and dry wine has a refreshing and crisp fruit flavor.
2. Bouquet Blanc - Notes of honey, apricot, and tropical fruits make this fresh and sweet white that brings a lingering aftertaste.
3. Moscato Rosé - Sweet flavors of peach and strawberry combine in this crisp and fruit forward wine, a great easy sipper

Tasting this week from Theuniskraal Wines

Here's a little more about the wines and the winemaker.

Wine Blog from Camilla and Bill Wheeler's visit to South Africa.

Andries Jordaan is the Winemaker at his family wine farm in Tulbagh, South Africa. The family purchased the farm in 1927 and 4 generations have lived and worked on the farm. Wine was exported to England starting in the 1940s and in 1948 their Theuniskraal Cape Riesling won a Gold Medal in London. The tradition continues and we will be tasting the Cape Riesling at our Sip & Shop.

One spring morning, this past September, Camilla and I joined Andy and Korie Andries Jordaan share the history of Theuniskraal Wines with Bill Wheeler of Nautical Wheelers in Oriental and New Bern, NC.for our first trip north of Paarl to the Tulbagh Wine Region. The Southern Hemisphere's reversed seasons and the cool weather was a welcome contrast to the late summer weather that we in left New Bern and Oriental, NC.

Tulbagh is also about 2 hours northeast of Cape Town and in a valley where 3 sides are mountains. The area is away from the cool Atlantic breezes but the mountains trap cold night air and gives the day and night temperature variation that grapes and winemakers like.

Andries says " I try to keep the process as simple as possible by doing the basics right for as we all know: a great wine is made in the vineyard."

Sheep on the farm

This is a working farm with vineyards, orchards, sheep and even ducks that keep the vineyards clear of snails by eating them like escargot.

Bill sneaks a peak at the tractors on the wine farm.
Andries wishes us safe travels from the door of the tasting room on the wine farm.
